Freelancers are shaping the future of work, and by 2027, they’re projected to make up a majority of the global workforce. You’re likely already feeling this now. Businesses of all sizes are tapping into these talent pools—from startups to now 30% of Fortune 500 companies—choosing freelancers is the new norm.

Freelance… free lance… wait who’s Lance? Actually, “lance” here doesn’t refer to a person but to the iconic spear knights used in jousting tournaments. In the freelancing world, choosing the right platform is a lot like selecting the ideal lance for battle: you want one that’s vetted, effective, and reliable. With FreeUp, only the top 1% of applicants are allowed to join, so you can go to battle knowing you’re working with the best.

Puns aside, here’s the best part: FreeUp is offering you a free $50 credit to work its magic on your business & professional goals.

Let’s dive into who they are, what makes them different, and how you can get your first few hours of work for free.

Who Is FreeUp?

FreeUp was founded in 2015 by Nathan Hirsch and Connor Gillivan. They grew a $25 million e-commerce business, but along the way they kept running into the same challenge, the top freelancer marketplaces weren’t meeting their needs when they were looking for talent to scale.

Instead of continuing to stumble along, they created FreeUp. There were several things that made the platform different:

  1. All freelancers were pre-vetted before joining the platform
  2. Clients and freelancers were matched quickly
  3. Client success was prioritized with an excellent support team in place

With their dedication the company grew and in 2019 it was acquired by Next Net parent company of The Hoth and more. Today FreeUp continues to focus on making sure companies can find the right freelancer easily.

But what continues to set them apart from other platforms?

Pre-Vetted Freelancers

FreeUp continues to pre-vet their freelancers before allowing them to join the platform. Only the Top 1% of applicants are allowed to join and they are held to the same high standards while there.

Not only do they pre-vet freelancers before they join the platform, they also make sure they’re a good match for you before making the introduction. Their skilled team looks at your job request and the freelancers applying to make sure you’re a good match so you don’t have to spend hours sorting through freelancers who don’t have the skills you need.

Limited Applicants

When you place a job request, FreeUp limits the number of applicants they initially send you. This reduces the number of applicants you need to review. However, you can always request more candidates and provide feedback to help the team better match you.

No Turnover Guarantee

When you’re in the middle of a project the last thing you want to worry about is your freelancer quitting. And FreeUp asks their freelancers to stay with projects until the end. Unfortunately, sometimes life happens and that’s not always possible.

If that does happen, FreeUp has a no turnover guarantee, they’ll help you find a replacement and in some circumstances can provide credits to help with onboarding costs.

24/7 Live Support and Account Managers

When was the last time a freelancer platform called you? At FreeUp, don’t be surprised if one day you answer your phone and there is an account manager on the other end checking to see how your experience is going. You can even book a call with an account manager and get a walk-through of the platform and answers to your questions about hiring and managing freelancers.

In addition to some pretty excellent account managers (we might be biased because we love ours), they have a 24/7 Live Support team. If you have a question or concern just hop into the chat widget and talk to a real person instead of having a frustrating conversation with AI.

In October of 2024 they ran a promo for a $50 dollar credit. Keep an eye on your emails from FreeUp because that’s often where promos are announced. We’re certainly looking forward to seeing what they have coming the rest of the year.

Getting Started With Your FreeUp Freelancer

You signed, you found your freelancer, now what? We have some tips we learned from our FreeUp account manager that we want to share with you.

Put a Scope of Work in Place

One thing our account manager told us was to get everything in writing. There are many reasons behind this but we want to touch on a couple:

  1. It helps set expectations: Everyone being on the same page with roles and responsibilities is imperative; it helps prevent issues and ensures that everyone knows what to expect.
  2. If there’s ever an issue, you have documentation: Hopefully you find the perfect freelancer and never have an issue. But things happen, and if it does, you will want documentation to send over to the FreeUp team.

A scope of work is a great place to outline expectations for hours, quality of work, KPIs, pay structure, etc. And, we even use a nifty template that FreeUp provided us with.

It’s in a Google Doc and you can make a copy of it and completely make it your own.

Create Standard Operating Procedures With Ease

Unless your freelancer is creating your processes, you want to document the process you need them to follow. You can spend hours typing out the process and capturing screenshots or you can create video SOPs.

FreeUp has a great blog and one of our favorite articles talks about how to create video SOPs using tools like Scribe or Loom. We’ve definitely used tools like that in our process and it has helped us streamline and make sure we’re all on the same page.
